COLLAPSE INTO CLARITY: UNDERSTANDING HEXAGRAMS 23 AND 43

Series Continuation: Part 2/32

Continuing our journey through the I Ching, which began with an exploration of Hexagrams 1 and 2—symbols of pure, unblended yang and yin energies—we now turn our focus to Hexagrams 23 and 43, which offer a perspective of change through Splitting Apart and Breaking Through. The previous overview laid the foundation for understanding the essential dynamics of initiating and receiving energies, as embodied by the first two hexagrams. This provided a rich context for appreciating the cyclic and dual nature of the I Ching, setting the stage for a deeper exploration into how these energies manifest in increasingly more complex scenarios.

As we transition into Hexagrams 23 and 43, we encounter themes of disintegration and renewal, each line revealing how subtle shifts can lead to significant life changes. This installment introduces a unique twist—The Channel of Structuring—formed by the gate 23/43 opposition due to this opposition being one of three oppositional pairs which are also harmonic counterparts in the Human Design system.

In this installment, I hope to deepen our insight into the nature of change itself—how elements split apart and come together in new forms, echoing the process of a snake shedding its skin. I've also made the decision to maintain a consistent format and flow for this series. There will likely be some repetitive phrasings, but my hope is to build off of the previous structure laid in the previous installments in a way that ultimately expresses a fuller perspective than could be expressed in a single article.

About the I Ching: Hexagrams 23 and 43

The I Ching, an ancient oracle, not only serves as a guide through the complexities of life but also as a bridge between the visible and the invisible, offering profound insights that are deeply expressive of the unfoldment of time and the human psyche. Its structure, composed of 64 hexagrams, mirrors the dynamic patterns of change and transformation that reflect both individual journeys and the evolution of collective consciousness.

Carl Jung, who deeply appreciated the I Ching, described it as a text that "does not offer itself with proofs and results; it does not vaunt itself, nor is it easy to approach. Like a part of nature, it waits until it is discovered." This sentiment captures our approach to Hexagrams 23 and 43, which invites us to balance our individual expression within the collective agreement, pushing us towards transformative breakthroughs while remaining integrally connected to our communities.

Hexagram 23, "Splitting Apart," and Hexagram 43, "Breakthrough," though distinct, share structural similarities that echo broader themes found in Hexagrams 1 and 2. Both involve pivotal shifts at their sixth lines, where the pure energies of the 1 & 2 encounter their initial distortions. In Hexagram 23, this manifests as a yin line atop five lines of yang, suggesting a moment of vulnerability within strength. Conversely, Hexagram 43 introduces a yang line in a predominantly yin sequence, indicating a spark of initiation within receptivity.

As we delve deeper into the layers of Hexagrams 23 and 43, we uncover the delicate interplay between assimilation and individuation, each line offering a unique perspective on the struggle between innovation and tradition, personal insight and collective wisdom. This exploration is not just an academic exercise but a journey into understanding how these ancient symbols can guide us in navigating the complexities of modern life.

The I Ching and the Human Psyche: Hexagrams 23 and 43

While some might seek to invalidate or ignore the importance and relevance of the I Ching because it's ancient, foreign, or "woo," my personal perspective on the I Ching is that it offers a profound roadmap for navigating the intricate landscapes of the subconscious and material worlds we inhabit. With its 64 hexagrams, each composed by six lines that are either broken (yin) or unbroken (yang), the text outlines a form of binary code for understanding human situations, emotions, and internal states.

In our exploration of Hexagrams 23, "Splitting Apart," and 43, "Breakthrough," we see reflections of deep psychological archetypes and existential themes that are universally resonant. Hexagram 23 deals with themes of disintegration, illustrating the psychological necessity of releasing outdated structures and ideas, much like the process of psychoanalytical 'deconstruction' where old patterns are dismantled to make way for new growth. On the other hand, Hexagram 43 represents the moment of clarity or epiphany—a sudden breakthrough in thought or insight that pierces the veil of the subconscious, bringing forth new understanding and perspectives.

Together, these hexagrams illustrate the cycles of mental and emotional disintegration and renewal that are fundamental to the development of awareness and the maturation process. Each line within these hexagrams offering an aspect of this narrative, capturing the subtle interplay of internal and external forces that propel us through time and space.

Exploring Hexagrams 23 and 43 Through Opposition

The dynamic between these hexagrams serves as a profound reminder of life's cyclic nature, where the end of one phase signals the beginning of another. Hexagram 23 expressing the process of systematic/institutional decline or necessary elimination of what no longer serves, setting the stage for the potential wisdom that Hexagram 43 introduces. Conversely, Hexagram 43, representing a sudden, clear insight or decision, can only manifest effectively once the ground has been cleared by the processes depicted in Hexagram 23.

Together, they demonstrate the essential balance between breaking down old structures and breaking through with renewed clarity. This relationship underlines how understanding what a situation lacks, or what must be let go, is as crucial as recognizing the new opportunities it presents. Through this opposition, the I Ching teaches us the value of contemplating and appreciating both the losses and gains, the endings and beginnings, that shape our experience.

The Sun and Earth in Opposition: A Celestial Dialogue

Every year the Sun transits and defines each hexagram in the mandala, casting light on its unique attributes. Directly opposite, the Earth receives and grounds these highlighted themes into their opposite. If the Sun is broadcasting the themes of a specific yang line, the Earth holds the corresponding yin energy. This exchange embodies the fundamental dynamics of communication—speaking and listening, acting and reflecting.

As the Earth and Sun continue their orbit, they swap positions, offering fresh insights and deeper understandings with each shift. This continuous exchange illustrates the principle that wisdom is not merely accumulated but actively evolves through our engagement with an ever-changing universe. It is a vivid reminder that true insight is gained not just through contemplation but through an active, reciprocal dialogue with the world around us.

This ongoing "conversation" between the Sun and Earth can be likened to the regular updates we receive on our smartphones. Just as software developers refine apps to enhance functionality and fix bugs, celestial forces continually refine and evolve the "software" (transformation) and "firmware" (mutation) of our lives. Each cycle bringing new features (insights, people, environments, etc) to our experience and correcting misunderstandings from previous cycles. This perspective allows us to appreciate the dynamic, ever-improving nature of our personal and collective growth, inviting us to embrace change as an integral part of our developmental process.

I'm oftentimes led to the assumption that, for most people, there's a prevalent sense of disconnection from our planetary home—a forgetfulness of our intrinsic link to the Earth. Yet, just as the myriad organisms of our microbiome are essential components of our physical being, we too are integral elements of Earth herself. The Earth also isn't separate from the solar body she is a component of—our solar system, and our solar system is part of increasingly larger bodies as well.

One of my goals for this series is to to remind us of this profound connection, encouraging a deeper acknowledgment of how intimately we are woven into the fabric of this planet and with each other. Understanding this connection expands our perspective, fostering a more harmonious existence with the natural world, with ourselves, and with others.

This perspective not only guide us in navigating life’s intricacies but also helps us see our place in a larger story that is continuously unfolding. Inviting us to live with broader awareness and cooperation, as we learn to surrender and flow with the rhythms and pre ordained patterns that influence our journey.

Beyond the Sun and Earth: The Celestial Orchestra

While this series predominantly focuses on Sun/Earth oppositions, it's important to acknowledge the broader celestial ensemble playing in the background. Every planet, and many significant satellites like the Moon and Chiron, traverse the mandala in the same order, but at their distinct pace. The Moon cycles monthly, driving swift changes in our emotional and subconscious landscapes, while Pluto’s journey spans 247 years, marking profound generational shifts. All of these celestial bodies working in concert to shape the thematic and energetic tapestry of our lives, emphasizing that the dialogue between our central Self (the Sun), our collective Self (the Earth), and our individual selves is part of an eternal symphonic composition.

The Spiral of Change: Understanding the I Ching Mandala

Continuing from the basic overview of the structure of the I Ching mandala in the first installment, I'd like to introduce the idea that this spiral visualization is not just a theoretical concept but a practical guide to personal and collective evolution. As we revisit each hexagram, we are not merely circling back to familiar lessons but rather ascending through layers of understanding and maturity. Each pass through the spiral offers a chance to apply these timeless insights with increased wisdom and to perceive subtle nuances previously unnoticed.

Deepening Insight with Each Spiral Return

The I Ching teaches us that wisdom is not a destination but a journey of continuous expansion. Each turn in the spiral brings us closer to the core truths of our existence, peeling away superficial understandings to reveal deeper layers. This process mirrors the growth of a tree—each year it adds a new ring, each layer representing a cycle of life, knowledge, and experience that contributes to the strength and resilience of the whole.

Practical Applications of the Spiral Perspective

In practical terms, the spiral model of the I Ching can be applied to personal growth, decision-making, and understanding the dynamics of change within our lives. It invites us to consider not only what each hexagram teaches but also how these teachings evolve as we grow and our circumstances change. This approach enables us to view the I Ching as a living guide, continually adapting its wisdom to our present conditions and future aspirations.

A Tool for Sustained Development

Ultimately, this spiral model underscores the I Ching’s role as a tool for sustained development. It encourages us to remain open to learning and relearning from each hexagram as we evolve, ensuring that our understanding deepens and our actions become more aligned with the underlying principles of change and balance that govern the universe. As we navigate through life's spirals, the I Ching stands as a beacon of wisdom, guiding us through each phase with clarity and insight.

Incorporating Opposition in Practical Divination

Understanding the significance of oppositional hexagrams profoundly enhances the practice of I Ching divination. For example, when the Sun transits Hexagram 43, it emphasizes the need for breakthrough and insight, while the Earth in opposition in Hexagram 23 highlights the importance of letting go of obsolete structures, relationships, and beliefs. This opposition deepens our understanding of the interplay between disintegration and renewal, guiding us to integrate these transformative energies both internally and in our actions.

So, practically speaking, when the Sun illuminates the themes of Hexagram 23, it signals an essential time to discard what no longer serves us, facilitating a period of necessary transformation and renewal.

Understanding Hexagrams 23 and 43

Hexagrams 23 and 43 are inherently interconnected, depicting the fundamental duality and interdependence of all phenomena—disintegration and breakthrough, assimilation and insight, removal and renewal. In their opposition, they illustrate a deeper dialogue about the necessity of breaking down outdated structures to pave the way for new insights and understandings. This interplay highlights the cyclic nature of transformation where each force must be acknowledged and managed, ensuring that decay leads to regeneration and individual insights contribute to collective evolution.

Line-by-Line Analysis and Oppositional Dynamics

Each line in Hexagrams 23 and 43 can be paired with its corresponding line in the other to reveal deeper insights about their interaction, providing insight into how to navigate complex transformations and breakthroughs.

For example, the first line of Hexagram 23, which highlights the problematic nature of proselytization and undermining established values, paired with the first line of Hexagram 43, which stresses the importance of patience and waiting for the right moment to act, teaches us about the need for careful consideration before initiating changes. Such pairings across all lines offer a nuanced exploration of how the forces of disintegration and breakthrough, resistance and acceptance, challenge and balance each other, informing our individual and collective evolution.
